Hi! I’m Melissa, and I’m the voice behind the blog. I want to tell you a little about my family, so you can get to know us.
Meet the Felkins Family
The Felkins family loves Jesus, family, music, learning, and adventures! Faith and family are the foundation of our identity. Henry and I have been married since 1998, and we have built our lives around worship ministry in Oklahoma City (although we are native Texans). Our three kids are growing up way too fast, but we love to see what each new stage of life brings! We’re trying our best to create as many memorable experiences with them as we can while we still have them at home with us. We’ve had our share of challenges, just like you have, but our faith in God and our commitment to each other always brings us through and helps us keep finding joy in the journey!
I am a homeschool mom with a Ph.D. in educational psychology. I really enjoy learning with my family! On Sunday mornings, you will usually find me worshiping behind the keyboard at our church. One of my passions is providing young people with the opportunity to discover and develop their God-given talents. I am the Fine Arts coordinator at our church. Through this ministry, teens can participate in drama, human video, instrumental, vocal, writing, art, and many more categories, and challenge themselves in state and national competitions. We’ve been from coast to coast with these students and created lifelong friendships along the way!
My health has been a challenge for me. Over the past few years, I have been diagnosed with a bone marrow failure disease and a brain tumor. It’s been tough, and I face daily battles, but I am still here and I am going to make the most of it! Maybe I’ll write more about this in the blog, but for now, just know that I can relate to those of you who deal with chronic health concerns.
Henry is the love of my life. We grew up out in the country just over the back fence from each other, so I really did marry the boy next door! I couldn’t have made a better choice for a husband and father for my children. He is kind, loving, giving, and super funny! Through all of my medical issues the last few years, the “in sickness and in health” vow has certainly been put to the test. I can’t begin to tell you how strong this man is. He never waivers. He does what he needs to do to take care of his family. And he tells me I’m beautiful, even on my worst days.
Henry is one of those talented people who is good at just about everything, and he uses his gifts to support our family in many ways. One of my favorite things in this world is listening to him play and sing. His full-time career is as a worship pastor, but he is also a piano tuner, a music teacher, a carpenter, a recording engineer, an audio/visual subcontractor, a mechanic, and whatever else he needs to be. We are so blessed with this man who gives of himself so selflessly to provide for our family!
Elijah graduated from high school last year and should be finishing up his associate’s degree this year. He is interning with a video production company and plans to pursue this as a career. This will be a great outlet for his natural storytelling abilities. Truth be told, I think he could be as successful in front of the camera as behind it. Elijah keeps us laughing with his quick wit and funny accents! When he finally makes it to the UK (his dream trip), he’ll fit right in!
Piano and bass are Elijah’s instruments of choice, and he has spent his teen years as a leader on the youth worship team at church. These days, he is playing with the adult worship team and running sound for social media live videos for the church. No description of Elijah would be complete without mentioning his affinity for video games. He’s a very social and animated creature, so everyone in the house (and probably the neighborhood) gets a constant play-by-play of his video game adventures with his friends!
Isaac has much less to say than anyone else in the family, but he has other ways of making himself known. Every moment he can, Isaac is practicing guitar or drums, and his diligence has paid off. At 16 years old, his skill is astounding! He has been playing with the adult worship team for a couple of years now, in addition to his position as a leader in the youth worship band.
Need a good hug? Isaac is your guy! He gives the absolute best hugs, and he is truly sincere in his affection. He loves the Word of God, the USA, his guitars, and, of course, his family and friends! Isaac wants to see the world! Australia is on his bucket list, but he’s happy traveling anywhere. If he could combine his passions for music and adventure into a lifelong career, that would be a dream come true. I say let’s make this happen!
Our baby girl’s name suits her well. Symphony is a beautiful instrumentation of passion and personality. She’s a musician, a singer, a photographer, an artist, a baker, and a chef. And this 14-year-old girl is all about the puns and the dad jokes! If she could go anywhere in the world, Paris is the place. She’s in her 3rd year of French classes, and we want to make sure she gets the chance to practice her language skills at the Eiffel tower someday!
Not to be outdone by her brothers, Symphony doesn’t let us forget she’s in the house either. One of her favorite things is “singing loud for all to hear” (Elf movie reference). We love hearing her beautiful voice and piano playing, and we love even more that she uses her gifts to serve as a leader on the youth worship team. Symphony’s persistent love for board games helps our family to take the time to get together and connect. I love how she loves to make others feel special!
